This EP felt like it came together a lot easier than the first two, where I seemed to have quite a few battles with myself, creatively. The A track, Virtue, is a very techy number with a lot of elements, and as far as sounds go, it really ticks all the boxes for me and what I want to put out on EOOM. I did say that this EP came together easier than the first two, but that doesn’t mean it came without any battles at all.
I had completely finished this track and then all of a sudden, I just hated the bass, which is quite weird because that is what actually shaped this entire idea, and without that original bass, nothing else in this track would have existed - it was the driving force, until I hated it. I simply just muted off the original bass and went about writing a new one using a technique I knew would work so actually, it slotted right in, and wasn't too much of a chore. Oh yeah, I also stopped liking the snare - which is actually becoming a common thing with a lot of tunes I write, so I completely replaced that too.
It makes sense to me that I want to switch the snare out a lot of the time, because when I start a track, I start with drums, kick, then snare, and so forth, so naturally when I get all the other elements in there, if that snare ain’t right, It’s going to stand out like a sore thumb, for the wrong reasons (obviously, because a sore thumb is never good, is it…). A snare is one of the most important elements in a track for so many reasons, and I do find that to be one of the only downsides of starting a track with drums - if you get the snare right off the bat, it’s probably by chance, because what have you got to reference it with… the kick? That ain’t enough, because the snare carries way too much tone across the frequency spectrum, and until you get all of the other elements in there i.e bass, mids etc, you won’t know if you have the right snare.
Discipline is a cool track - It lends itself more to the Virus sound, IMO (the late 90s/early 00s Virus sound, that is). For the most part, the structure is a lot less chaotic, unlike ‘Virtue’, but it does pick up the pace as it progresses. The bass is the focal point here, it’s dirty, and dusty, and full of character, and when writing a track like this you have to prioritise the elements which is why it is a little more minimal around the rhythm section and accompanying sounds, because that bass sucks up all of the limelight, and rightfully so.
The date of this release is quite significant to me, and of course, the label, and I had to have a release on this date, it would have been rude not to, and very unobservant of me if I had missed it. This date will never land again…I hope you enjoy the music…
